Big Data Needs Big Community

Data, like any content, has greater value when multiple opinions and interpretations of it are shared and built upon by a group.   Big data needs a big community to analyze it and understand it.   At DataSwell, we’ve built the platform to create a big data community driven by four key features:

  1. Share - users have the ability to easily create and share data visualizations with the community.  This allows users to leverage the analysis and visualizations of fellow community members.  Users are not starting with a blank slate.
  2. Socialize – members can easily post their charts and data visualizations to their social networks (facebook, twitter, email).  This is important as it broadens access to the data and extends the community by inviting others to join.
  3. Rank – popular visualizations are brought to the forefront so users know where the community is most engaged.  This ensures relevance and reduces user search time.
  4. Discuss - Users can add a comment string to the data.  Data is great content, but interpretation and debate adds value.

With sharing, socializing, ranking, and discussion we create a vibrant data community that benefits from the cumulative knowledge of its members.

US Airways Execs Likely to Reduce AA Fuel Hedging

US Airways CEO Doug Parker has been named the new CEO of American Airlines.  Parker, along with US Airways President Scott Kirby has steered US Airways away from hedging since 2008 when the extreme volatility in fuel prices almost led to US Airways’ fuel hedges bankrupting the company.

American, on the other hand, has followed the more traditional airline route of smoothing out jet fuel costs by purchasing hedging contracts to lock in fuel prices to provide greater certainty to fuel expenses going forward.  This strategy has worked well in an environment of rising prices but can lock a carrier into paying higher prices when prices fall rapidly, as they did in 2008.

The chart below depicts the volatility in jet fuel prices over the past several years.

Travel Data Intelligence

Travel and Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world and has a wealth of publicly available information and data.  However, the data is unorganized and strewn across the internet in so many shapes and formats that it is inaccessible to most travel professionals.

DataSwell’s mission is to help travel professionals make wise decisions by providing easy access to defining sets of data and analyses.

To fulfill our mission, we’ve aggregated thousands of datasets in the travel and tourism space, put these into a tool that allows users to easily analyze the data, enabled users to create personalized dashboards, and if desired, share these with the DataSwell user community.

DataSwell has aggregated years of data from many sources of information including company’s quarterly SEC filings, convention and visitor bureaus’ reports, government offices of travel and tourism, and other sources of public data.  Even the largest companies in our industry often don’t have appropriate access to the wealth of industry.  Frequently, this data is isolated on an analyst’s PC (if the analyst resources are even available) instead of being centrally hosted where any marketing, finance, sales, or other decision makers can quickly access and analyze the data 24/7 via their browsers.

Delta Refinery Purchase Looking Better?

At the Deutsche Bank Aviation Conference last week, Delta reviewed some of the data driving their continued enthusiasm for their refinery acquisition.  Discussing the price of jet fuel and specifically the crack spread, which denotes the price differential between crude oil and jet fuel, Delta stated that the rise in the crack spread was their fastest growing cost. From 2009 to 2011, the crack spread grew 73% a year.  In contrast, non-fuel costs for the airline grew at an average annual rate of only 1%.

Delta stated that at full capacity, the refinery would cover 80% of their domestic jet fuel needs and the first jet fuel production from the refinery will begin end of this month.  The airline is expecting the refinery to generate a savings of $300 million in jet fuel costs in 2013.

Delta’s strategy also includes purchasing crude oil from North Dakota’s Bakken fields at prices below what the airline pays today.  This should increase savings beyond the current estimate of $300 million annually.  Jet Fuel currently costs Delta over $10 billion a year.  Please see chart below.

Dollar Thrifty Almost Bankrupt in 2008 Sells to Hertz for $2.3 Billion

Four years ago Dollar Thrifty was nearly forced into bankruptcy and its market capitalization had slipped to under $25 million.  Since then, the rental car company posted three straight years of improving results and last week Dollar Thrifty finally sold to Hertz for $2.3 billion.  Quite the turnaround.

Dollar Thrifty’s president, chief and chairman, Scott Thompson, said: “After three years of merger-related activity and speculation, I am pleased that we have reached a win-win transaction for both Hertz and Dollar Thrifty.”

Hertz’s chairman and chief executive, Mark P. Frissora, stated “We’ll be a stronger global competitive player with a full range of rental options not only in the U.S. but in Europe and other markets given Dollar Thrifty’s strong international presence.”

Hertz first approached Dollar Thrifty in 2010, offering about $1.2 billion.  This bid heated up bidding for Dollar Thrifty and drew Avis into the race.  However, Avis had too many antitrust concerns and ultimately abandoned the pursuit.

IAG Joining American and US Airways Discussions?

This past week American Airlines and US Airways agreed to exchange information in an effort to merge their companies.  The two airlines said they would work in “close collaboration” and “good faith” to evaluate a merger.

However, American also said it signed non-disclosure agreements with other unnamed parties.  Reportedly, one is with International Airlines Group (owner of British Airways and Iberia).  IAG may seek to buy a stake in American to cement its close relationship with American and the OneWorld alliance.  However, due to government regulations, IAG could only buy a 25 percent stake in American or a merged American, US Airways entity.

Expedia Up Big on 2Q Results (Chart)

Expedia shares were up 25% on Friday to a 52-week high, after reporting second-quarter results.

Results were driven by strong domestic and international bookings and strong hotel revenue growth up 16% year over year.

However, softness in European travel affected Expedia’s results.

“Management indicated southern Europe was incrementally weaker in the second-quarter versus last quarter, with noticeable declines in Europe to U.S. consumer travel, though growth overall remains relatively healthy,” wrote Aaron Kessler, analyst for Raymond James in a note to investors.

However, George Askew, at Stifel Nicolaus, noted “given a relatively modest multiple, mid-to-high teens revenue….and the expedia.com brand upgrade catalyst still forming, we believe Expedia’s share price still has a long way to go.”

SWA LUV’s 2Q Profit, Up 42% (Chart)

Rising fares are helping Southwest offset higher fuel costs versus last year.  On Thursday, the airline stated that 2Q profits were up 42% to $228 million.  Operating revenue was up 12% to $4.62 billion.

Southwest’s average one-way fare topped $150, up 5 percent from last summer.

But airlines may be worried that consumers are unwilling to go higher. After nearly a dozen broad fare increases in 2011, there have only been three this year, the last in late March.

Southwest also said that its capacity won’t increase further this year, and expects only a “modest” increase in capacity next year as it takes on larger aircraft.

On Friday, US Airways seized an opportunity to influence the bankruptcy proceedings for potential merger target American Airlines by buying $1 million worth of parent AMR Corp.’s debt.

Can AA Revenue Gains Combat Merger?

Once again, bankrupt American is outpacing the airline industry in terms of unit revenue gains.

The carrier reported Friday that its passenger revenue per available seat mile in May rose 7.3%, the biggest gain among the five major carriers who have so far reported May PRASM.

American’s May outperformance follows the industry’s second biggest gain in the first quarter and the biggest gain in April. American, battling a takeover bid by US Airways, has trumpeted its unit revenue gains in order to make the point that it can successfully compete on its own.
Strength in Latin America, a continuing gradual improvement in benefits from a trans-Atlantic joint venture with European partners and elimination of unprofitable flying are all considered to be factors in American’s RASM gains.

The May improvement was driven “by a strong yield environment and increased international load factors,” American said in a prepared statement. “We outperformed the industry in April and our strong momentum is continuing,” said spokesman Sean Collins.

During the first quarter, American reported a 10.3% PRASM gain, trailing onlyDelta’s 11% gain. In April, American reported an 11.6% gain, the highest.
